The time has come to do some research into auto boxes with the potential to replace my faithful Automatic transmission as it has seen many yrs of hard labour and is stuck in 2nd gear. Instead of rebuilding, I am considering going down the Patrol Automatic route. It's there as an option for us and thought to take advantage of this.
I have acquired some information but I need some clarification.

So far this is what I have learned:
    Patrol TB42 (89 Model)
    4.2 litre, water-cooled petrol engine4-speed Automatic

    RE4R03A
4-speed electronic auto with lock-up torque converter and two-mode shift pattern (economy & amp; power).

    Gear Ratios:
    1st: 2.784
    2nd: 1.544
    3rd: 1.000
    4th: 0.694
    Reverse: 2.275

    Some questions:
    - What is the best Patrol year model that has the best gear box to suit the Z32TT.
    - Are the Patrol boxes really strong enough for a Z32TT stock or moded, I mean are they the same internally?
    - Are the patrol boxes really plug and play?
    - Are the gear ratios above the same as the Z32TT AUTO?
    - With the HOLD/POWER button, do ALL the patrol boxes have that?
    - With O/D on/off do ALL the Patrol boxes have that?
    - If for example, the gear ratios are the same and HOLD/POWER ability is there, is there something else that needs consideration?

Any help with this will be much appreciated:zlove:

    Adz_79 I do it in a Zed

It's the gu (and some GQ) patrol that shares the gearbox with the TT. You will have to change bell housings and extension housing to fit the zed. Gearing is the just about the same. Patrol from memory is 2.785, 1.545, 1.000 and 0.695. The o/d power and hold are all controlled by the ATCU. So the box internally electrical is no different. Funny thing is that the patrol guys usually seek the zed box as an easier find for replacement. Have a read on the patrol Forums, heaps of info there :)

    Your memory sucks. :D

    Z32 TT Auto ratios
    2.784
    1.544
    1
    0.694

The Patrol ratios are only slightly different, a while back it was being said its a tougher box, a load of cods wallop !

Also remember that ratios etc are all tied up in the TCU change maps and ECU fuel maps etc.

No need to go looking for trouble you have enough already. :)

These guys have heaps of experience with the RE4R03A in the Patrol, I would trust them to do a Z32 box, but when I spoke to them (years ago) they didn't have core units.

After reading the recent posts relating to the Auto Transmissions, I have come to the conclusion that the 3rd/4th clutches have gone.

Pretty much like previous people have experienced, cruising in 4th, foot on floor:br:, it will drop in 2nd, hard, and that's pretty much where it stays.

Took it for a drive yesterday to confirm and YEP, stuck in second and as you put the foot down slightly the REVS increase but the car is not going anywhere. With the gear selector in 2nd the car remains responsive throught the Rev Range BUT once in D it stays in second and slips BIG TIME. Hence the conclusion, ITS AUTO Change over time.

Some more advice is rqd please:

What about the later Patrol GU 5 speed AUTO? Would that fit, or the TCU won't recognise the 5th gear. Or are the 5 speeds rubbish?

Also with the ratios of the GU Patrol boxes being ever so slightly different at the 3rd decimal place, were talking about the size of a flies d@@k here, would it be reasonable to say at the end of the day, the difference is insignificant?

    Any ideas?

just rebuild the zed auto will be a better end result
    less pain too

Got quoted RIDICULOUS prices (over 3k for rebuild) I mean, give me a break.

It is cheaper to get one from Coz here. It's ridiculous.

So have decided to source a good second hand either locally or from the US.
Both cases work out FAR better than a rebuild. Sometimes you have to take your chances, I must admit.

Also, the current transmission (while unmodified) copped the full impact of 15+PSI of Z goodness on a daily basis for 3yrs non stop. I remember it slipping on a few occasions while gunning it up Mooney Mooney Bridge on the F3 before the valve body mod. So can't complain really.

Now the car is almost a garage queen and back to standard boost with the occasional weekend outing or cruise so the next box should last forever.

    All good:)

To save dollars I would be just hitting up the wtb section.

I sold our shift kitted auto box for $450 some time ago. Others have gone for less pending their condition. So for a cheaper fix its the way to go.

What you need to realise is that $3000+ is for quiet a bit.

    Drain fluid
    Remove and refit box
    Fully disassemble reassemble the box
Replace all seals, friction and metal clutches
Refurbish pump, face valve body halves
    Replace all solenoids (they should)
    Replace worn parts sprags etc
Recondition torque converter ($500-$1000 on its own)
    Flush cooler and cooler lines
    Fill with fluid
    Road test
    Warranty

Start adding up hours and parts cost etc and you start to see very easily where the $3000 plus comes from.

Dont compare it to a unknown condition second hand box laying on the ground for $500 that could cost you $800-$1000 to have fitted.

CZP's $3000 TT box will cost about $5000 fitted buy time you add shipping etc.

    Box in AU $3500
    Torque converter $750
    Fit $750

Ended up going with the second hand option. Fingers crossed it all works out OK.
