    Hi all,

Car for some reason not starting. Happened yesterday, thought it may have been low fuel (light doesnt work, was sitting on the E) but just put some more in and still doesnt seem to start.

It cranks over and sounds ok, but I dont think it's getting fuel. Is there an easy way to isolate and test if its the fuel pump? Am I right that the fuel pump makes a buzzing noise after you turn off the car? Because that noise has changed a bit lately and it sounded a bit more strained and being low on fuel probably didnt help it...

Spark plugs were changed a few months ago and seemed to be fine. Anything else I should look at?

ECU diagnostic is the first thing

to try (here). See the paragraph at the end of the article for the 'paperclip' method. You might find a code 21 ignition circuit which is likely to be PTU.

A non-technical/easy way check the fuel pump is to simply squeeze the fuel line midway between the fuel filter and the inlet spigot on plenum with your fingers, then get someone to crank it over, if you feel internal pressure when cranking, then fuel is unlikely to be the issue.

Do the ECU diagnostic (or get someone with datascan/conzult/ECu talk), then let us know what you find.

ECU is 55, PTU is series 1 but relocated and has never been an issue.

Will try squeezing the fuel line and see what happens, thanks!

Ok tried that and it has pressure... hmm, so probably not the fuel pump then.

Now I'm completely stumped. Ideas people?!

    S1 PTU ?

You mentioned in your OP that the car does crank over and sound okay. Does it fully prime? Die on idle?

If it is fully not starting; do the following- Switch the ignition on so all the dash lights come on 3 times in a row (each time fully turning the ignition off) and on the 4th time fully attempt to turn it over. It's helped me quite a few times ! just not with Zeds.

It seems to just make it by itself and sounds very rough for about 2 seconds and then dies.

    fuel filter?

You mentioned that it had gotten low on fuel, may have picked up a belly full of crud off the bottom of the tank and blocked the filter. Could be worth a try  or your fuel pump could be cactus
