Shannons won't insure my car for Track days...

    Lil' Baz I Love Skeptics!!!

Spoke with Shannons today about insurance coverage for my Zed during the Track Events at Goulburn's Nissan/Datsun Nationals...

Apparently they no longer cover non-"CLASSIC" vehicles for track events, and wouldn't give me a clearly defined definition of what exactly entailed a "CLASSIC" vehicle...

I would have thought that as the leading insurer of high-performance vehicles in Australia, Shannons would be all over encouraging track days as a safe alternative to the stupidity that is street-racing...

    Apparently not...

    Very, very disappointing... :(

Perhaps I'll just take my speed to the streets like the off-centre baseball cap, burn-out tyre wearing VL Commodore types and wipe out myself, my car and a family with young children...

    :br:

Seriously though, what are those of you who are entering the track events doing for insurance?

    Lil' Baz..... :zlove:

I'll be very surprised if you can find an insurer who will cover you for track events.

If it ever got wrecked at the track first thing you do is tow it out to the street. Seriously.

Eh I don't think they get that far into it.

My old man has been racing for years and I know this was done at least once at Oran Park (not his car).

I have been involved in two write offs (one my fault many years ago, the second more recent and other driver at fault) and there was no accident investigator assigned to either case.... At worst the police are involved and ask you how fast were you going and why did you crash. Possible neg driving charge if you claim to have hit a stationary object. That's it...

    classic car

The Classic Car Club of America defines a CCCA Classic as follows:
A CCCA Classic is a "fine" or "distinctive" automobile, either American or foreign built, produced between 1925 and 1948... Other factors, including engine displacement, custom coachwork and luxury accessories, such as power brakes, power clutch, and "one-shot" or automatic lubrication systems, help determine whether a car is considered to be a Classic.[1]

Unfortunately, the definition depends upon the market (AU, UK, US).

I am no stranger to "Track Events", but in all honesty, I have never known a time whilst pursuing such events, that insurance was available or affordable.
BTW, I am a Shannons customer.

I know a bloke that went to jail for doing just that. It was a new Porsche. Maybe he should have tried the jacket and dark glasses.

In seriousness, nobody will cover you for a track event. It's the good old days at your own risk, nobody will cover your precious property on your behalf while you race.

Lil baz your attitude is poor aswell. Your blaming a 3rd party for you not being able to accept responsibility on your behalf while you want to race. Instead you say they want to encourage you to race on the street. This is not the case, you just have a poor attitude.

If you want to use your car in a higher risk environment then grow a pair and have some responsibility that if you damage your precious car, this is your fault. Nobody wants you to race on the street, your just not mentally equipped to understand that car racing is not your right.

Slightly ot, but what actually happens if you're at fault in an accident at a track day? Same as in the real world I'd presume, you're hit with some big bill for somebody elses track car

Insurance Policies are a form of gambling.
In this case, you bet you will crash and need to make a claim(the price of the bet is the Insurance Premium).
Shannons(or any other company)bet that you will NOT crash or claim, and so they take the bet(and the premium).
They obviously have less confidence in you, than you do, and so they refuse to take the bet.
    It has always been thus!

    Actually no.
Everybody out there is expected to accept liability for being stupid enough to risk their lives and/or their machinery, ergo, you wear the responsibility for your own losses(it's part of the risk you take by being there).
Unusual I know, not being able to blame someone else for your own stupidity.:p:rolleyes:

if you just jump out there, are curtious of other racers you shouldnt have an issue, I suggest, if you wanna lay down some fast laps, choose a time when there is minimal cars out. but TBH, you are probably going to run the car off the track before you hit someone else.

Bit harsh there Guys... I mean, I see exactly what you mean, and I'm sure he does too, but you must admit, if there is any way we can protect our pride and joy, we'd all jump at the opportunity, even when knowingly taking a risk. Wouldn't you?

Its just like the stock market! you have to be prepared to lose your investment if things really go wrong. Insurance Companies have no control of what you do on the track, once the "red mist" comes down.

Exactly, if everybody could be relied upon to act carefully, responsibly and fairly, there would be minimal risk of damage to property or life.
Experience has shown this to be a tad altruistic, hence the need for Rules, Regulations and Laws.
Can you imagine just how far some people would "push the envelope" if they knew that they had absolutely no chance of having to wear the resultant cost?
Mad Max all over again X2.:eek:
