I have been very quiet on the forums for the past year. A monster has been lurking in the closet and I think it's time to reveal it.

My old motor had given up and was very low on compression, barely registering on 2 cylinders. Instead of rebuilding which I became very close to doing, I decided it was time for a change.

When 3.0L just doesn't cut it, here I present the 6.0L zed :)

    Freshly unwrapped:

    Will it fit?:

Not quite, better make it fit then.. Looks shocking in this pic, and that battery tray needed a good clean up.

    From inside:

Gotta loose those stock headers (they wont fit anyway :)) :

Might have gone a bit overboard on the cutting:

It's nice being able to fit your whole arm on top of the bell housing, room galore:

    New firewall:

Reverse sump & Started with 4 into 1 extractors but there was a serious ground clearance issue and this car has to stay streetable:

    Ahead with the tri-y design:

Mount it up (almost lines up with standard):

Modified zed gearbox mount (again only a tad out):

    Top view of extractors:

    Extractors finished and painted:

    Yep, still automatic :rofl::p

    Getting there..

    Finally all in:

Number plates to go with it :D
    [IMG]

Look at the size of the wheel arch gap since this motor is quite a bit lighter:

    Details -
Motor: Stock L98 6.0L v8 (as used in the VZ Thunder + VE SS)
Gearbox: Beefed up TH700 4 speed with High stall, B&M ratchet shifter
    ECU/PCM: Standard VE computer
Currently running MAF and stock tune to satisfy licensing.

The car is in driving order and as is, pulls harder than it did with my old setup with GT28R's. Will eventually upgrade cam and aiming for ~330rwkw. No idea what current output is but the torque is incredible (not to mention how it sounds!!) The gearbox will be the weakest link and time will tell if it can cope. May need to go even more impractical with a TH400.
It has obviously been built with straight line speed in mind which is why its staying automatic.

Has had engineer approval and will be going over the pits once I have finished a few little things.

    Anyway thats my 2c...
    Carry on..

    Kewl!

You only running a fan as a pusher on the rad? Can't really see for sure. That's what I have to do due to room :( I'm a bit worried about it actually...

And pod filter, did you enlarge the hole down the the pass side SMIC position and run silicone there?

Just need a big blower now :D

There is also a small thermo fan on the other side which doesn't cover the whole surface area unfortunately. There are some very slim design fans available though so might investigate them further and try to get one as big as possible. With such direct natural flow to the radiator though, it shouldn't get hot. As you can probably tell the fan you can see is the stock zed aux fan :)

    I DEMAND VIDEO

Must include one from behind, revving hard.
    One from behind, hard launch.
    One flyby at full noise.

    Do it, or be banished.

    All FOR, say AYE!!!

How far below the cross member does the milidon pan sit.

If you do run into temp issues, the VE accessories will knock about 40mm off the front of the engine, enough to get some decent fans in there.

Gee Kurt, you really kept that one quiet. I can't say I would agree that it pulls harder than GT28R setup, I've chewed up quiet a few LS6's now but then the Z with that donk would be lighter than a VE too.

Congrats on that conversion, you've done a fine job indeed :)

I've got to ask, why did you stick to a 4 speed auto when you could have chucked in the factory VE 6 speed auto?

Chrispy: didn't need to make the gap any bigger, there is actually a steel pipe running through the space with the silicone coupled to it and the pod filter on the other end of the steel pipe. Here is a pic:

ZXDevil: not sure on exact figures regarding the weight but it's definitely lighter + all the other stuff (air con, FMIC, piping, stuff behind dash) that was removed makes a difference. Oh and the gearbox is much lighter too (although weaker than the zed auto which i really should have stuck with and had adapted to this motor)

drz: I will get you an actual measurement if you like regarding the sump but here are some pics that give a general idea:

Karl: I'll be fair and say my motor was not in the best of health when i had the GT28R's anyway so lets just say it pulls harder than my old setup :) Either that or its all placebo and I forgot how it used to feel

I have no doubt it would perform better on the qtr mile though. Once its modified it will be a whole different story again..

I didn't actually give much thought to the VE 6 speed auto but i think because it would have needed a different ECU made things more complicated. It's a good point though and something i should probably investigate. If they make manual valve bodies for them that would be perfect
