    Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if people could direct me in the right direction.

My mechanic had removed my gearbox and we found lots of teeth from 1st gear in my oil when we drained it. Upon pulling the box apart it was clear that I need a replacement 1st gear. Other gears all look pretty good and bearing a in good condition too. Synchros are little worn so may as well replace while box is apart.

I really dont want to call up nissan for a price for 1st gear

So i was wondering if people know where i could get a brand new 1st gear and a full set of synchros.

Im not a big fan of dropping second hand gearbox into my car so i was thinking if the price gets highish, will it be worth getting a brand new box from TTzed for $3200 or the OS giken 5 gear set for $4000?

    thanks
    Michael

    Go all out...

Go all out on the box and drop some Billet alloy shift forks in there as well $1400 a pair.

May as well go the hole hog and make it as tough as possible. Os Giken ere we come ey;)

    ZX2NV Z Racing Evolution

Could go a full PPG gearset in either full dog straight cut, helical cut dog, normal syncro beefed up. Prices range from 9.5k to around 5k for the entry level one. Go to www.ppgearbox.com.au

Depends how you drive. If you are a hard racer you may need to look at alternatives as Fate and ZX2NV have listed. If you don't mind spending the cash, get a new box from the later model as they have improved synchros making shifts a lot smother, not to mention absolutely no old fatigued parts.

If you are going to fix the one you have do replace the bearings. They may look fine but no doubt some metalic particles from that shattered first gear will have caused irreversable damage shortening the life span.

    You can buy

the 98+ spec transmission with the better synchros for about 1800us 2150au odd plus shipping from coz. Imo that would be better than a rebuild, by a long way! and the cost is about the same, but you have a brand new gearbox.

    Thanks guys

Thanks for the replies so far. I have to think quick as the car is sitting at the mechanics.

I think im leaning more towards either a new box from TTzed or COZ or just replacing whats worn in my box.

I would love a strengthened box with helical gears from osgiken or ppg but from reading up their websites, they warn of more then usual noises. Im not too keen on more noise added to the car and also the fact that my car isnt a beast. Its only mildly modded. I can only see a maximum of just under 300rwkw in the future.

If no one knows where to get a new set of synchros and 1st gear at a cheaper price than nissan then i suppose i will have to buy a new box.

    thanks

I think you'll find that the NA MT G-box is $3,200, while the TT MT G-box is almost $4,000. Might be worth just replacing your lower grears.

How do you break nissans strongest gearbox? especially 1st gear. thats like drag racing tortures. Even then yould be more likely to strip 2nd with the way a drag on a RWD acts.

Meh, as for constructive critisism. go all out, it sounds like you probably want to give her stick anyways.

You might as well call nissan and get a price for your parts, will give you a better idea on what direction to take.

hmm are you auto or manual?

hmm man had ur delema b4 but i lost 2,4, and reverse. i thought about rebuilding the box but woulda cost me almost 4k ruffly $3500-4000 mine is an auto box, so i sourced it all out, hmm its prolly easyier if you get a brand new box from japan, if not you could get one of the gears goto your local gearbox specialist and ask them what kinda car gears are same, their is a 4x4 nissan patrol with the same gears will cost you ruffly about $750 for gearset, not sure how much is single one. nissan should be able to tell you aswell.

hmm nissan wont sell you single gears they only sell you a whole set. their *****, hmm but you can check ur local nissan, hmm also if its an auto also be sure to get your self an additional seperate oil cooler as it is very help full and benificial as they are shit on long drives/cruises, i lernt the hard way. 2 gearboxes later.

good luck with that mate. its gona bee a mission unless you get one brand new (gearbox that is)

Gearbox not as strong as pple think

    Thanks all for your replies,

Contrary to what ppl think about Nissan boxes being indestructable. I know what for some pple like John from UAS who runs standard gearbox with redline shock proof with button clutch have no problems after lots of track and drag days but for the ppl that know me, im not a overly aggressive driver.

I had the gearbox pulled once before about 60,000km ago where they replaced all the synchros and bearing, New 5 puck brass button clutch at the same time with redline shockproof lightweight.

About 20,000km ago I developed the frothing transmission oil problem out my breather pipe, thinking that i had emptied half the gearbox and starved it of oil, i added oil as soon as i could only to find that it emptied only about 100ml of fluid.

Funny that the whole time over the last 60,000km the only problem i have noticed with the box was when it was frothing. I do alot of hours on freeways and never had synchro problems prior.

Anyways, I think the best solution now is probably to get a new box from COZ, its about $2200 AUD before shipping and tax.... :zlove:

But i will try nissan and some transmission places to see if they can get some gear for me.

    Thanks
    Michael

    Hi Casper Armani,

Sounds like a group buy coming on...

I wonder if they would do a 'small' group buy on this one from Coz?

I too need a new 5 speed as the dreaded front bearing whine doesn't go away with time:rolleyes:

Are you still going to get the new 98+ version from the U.S.A.?

    Cheers, Kaz.

My local zed wrecker tells me a really good box sells for up to $750, which sounds about right. I paid $175 for a good auto box for the 280ZX a couple of weeks ago.
