What's the thing on the block with the hole in it just under the 30P stamping? Is it just for holding the block down when machining it?

Pretty sure that’s it. There are a few holes in the block that aren’t used during assembly that I have just always assumed were for machining.

Could be the engine oil dipstick location for a non turbo engine

Thats probably the best thing to do on a 300zx - chopping off all the crap that dosen't need to be there but as long as the important stuff is there thats the main thing,
these engines were put to good use on many different cars fwd and rwd, rhd and lhd too.

Can’t be dipstick in any configuration as it overhangs the sump. As in the surface that the sump seals against is inboard of the hole.

Wouldn’t go cutting it off you’ll be in trouble if you ever need to get the block decked again.

Wont chopping it off leave a weird half moon shape or weak thin wall on the hole, or can you get in deep enough to remove the whole hole altogether?

I wouldnt be cutting anything off the block if you cant put it to use.
If you absolutely had to remove it though i would just grind off the protruding bit of metal

I'd get another block if it ever needs reboring again. I've already chopped a bunch of stuff from the heads and lower intake manifold so might as well do some to the block too :)
