Hi Guys. A bit more progress has been made, and also a few changes. I Was originally going to use the LS Truck Coils, but was warned off them due to some apparent premature sparking or something along those lines, i was recommended to use AEM coils which are a little bigger so i made some brackets that fit over the cam covers and will use a short spark pug lead to the plugs. Also had to remake the wastegate pipe because i didn't allow enough room for suspension travel and wheel movement when steering, the tyre was coming too close, and went from a 3 inch exhaust up to a 4 inch. Wrapped the exhaust headers and cross over, and made up a bracket back to the engine block to support the weight of the turbo. A quick engine bay clean up and a hit with a few rattle cans of flat black before the engine was put back in.
I ended up de-powering the steering rack, added a couple of grease nipples and blocked off any ports with some bungs from the local hydraulic place Made up a bracket to mount the sensor for the crank trigger out of a piece of aluminium angel that i was lucky enough to have laying around. Got a couple of Vision wheels for the rear, 15X10 with a back space of 6.5 At the moment they have 275 50 R15 but might go to 275 60 R15, they fit with stock rear components, but only mm's away from the standard rear upper control arm, which i bought some Hardrace RUCA but they do not fit And the ECU is here
So its pretty much all plumped up - oil supply, fuel supply and coolant, still need to fit an over flow tank of some sort and put a pressure sensor in the trans line. I did make a school boy error and welded the wrong size temp boss's in the coolant hard pipe and also for engine and trans temp, i used M14X1.5 and should have been M12x1.5 so im hoping i can either use different sensors or find some sort of adaptor. Other than that, its pretty much ready to wire up and hopefully start - so not too much longer now. A few more pics bellow, showing the 4 inch exhaust and a few other bits and pieces, Cheers.
That looks great! Sorry to hear you didn’t end up using the LS coils -I believe the key to avoiding premature discharge is in not going overboard on the dwell time but looks like you already have an alternative covered. Looking really good.
Thanks Rob. Re the LS coils, it was one of those things, the guy that will be doing the tuning isn’t a big fan, and also said he has had trouble with them 35 psi and over. So I guess it’s a better to be safe than sorry scenario.
Normally when someone says "went from 3" to 4" exhaust" it sounds like a lot of work and expense until you see the pictures and its only 500mm of pipe. I like all the custom 1 off work that is obviously made just for this by a skilled hand sorting out issue after issue. Not a piece of crappy bling anywhere.
Your right, no bling here, just functioning parts required. Hey, and that exhaust is a full 600mm long
I like the gearbox dipstick mount and all the work that went into the throttle cable bracket and coil mounts See if you can buy some pre-made coil leads I recently used MSP, never again it was horrible With the sensor boss can you wind in a helicoil that will give you the reduced internal of 12x1.5? You can get reducers but they are a little bulky. Made a few similar mistakes myself recently with oil lines.
Thanks Matt. Im trying to keep things simple, neat and effective. I never thought of a heliciol, i wonder if they would fit and seal well, and i have searched for an adaptor but haven't come across any, so point me in the right direction if you know where. The only thing that concerns me about an adaptor is that it may not leave enough of the sensor exposed, but in saying that im not real sure just how much of the sensor needs to be sticking out. Check out the brackets i made for the LS coils - they looked pretty sweet, pitty i didn't end up using them lol.
Well, that's a shame cause they look really good. I'm sure someone will buy them off you along with the coils. I just did a search for M14x1.5male to m12x1.5 female and got this. There are a few on there and you should be able to get something at a hydraulic distributor here in Aus i would think. But you see how they are a bit on the long and bulky side. Depending on the sensor you maybe able to drill out the Male M14 section to allow a little more fluid contact. these are the coil pack that are needed , these are the denso d585 with heat sink this is what was on my old engine these fit in no problem in the original coil pack spot , these have taken 50 60 psi of boost ( these are out of the yukon truck ) there are many types but these are the ones needed for big boost/power /torque,
A bit of an update. Made a cover for the fuel tank, the top is secured with some 1/4 turn fasteners with some neoprene strip to help it seal and the whole cover is screwed down to the floor of the boot with M5 rivnuts, also with a neoprene strip between the two. Some fibreglass panels screwed into place replacing the glass targa's And i cut a hole in the front nose panel and filled it with mesh - for a bit of air flow.
Also made up a aluminium dash and a bit of an off shoot for the dash to mount any required buttons or switches to, and still have them in arms reach once strapped in. Next think is wiring it all up, that is one thing i will stay well away from. Hopefully the fella doing the job can make a start on it within a couple of weeks, once that is complete it should be ready to fire up - fingers crossed
