Scanner for diagnostics? There is nothing as Z31s are too old for that feature.

Only the mode dial on the ecu it self with red/green LEDs for flashing error codes. If you're luck the ecu will have a sticker that tells you what the flashes mean. Otherwise you need a FSM or Haynes manual to understand the flashes.

Do you have a copy of the relevant Nissan Workshop Manual for your car?

I have replaced Crank Angle Sensor as so many due to a lot of error codes I have also replaced Cylinder head sensor checked vacuums and replaced pretty much all of them ,just about everything that's at hand has been checked including earth contacts. Prior to replacing CAS I was getting the error codes as per normal. Since I replaced CAS The ECU lights Red and Green are stuck on. There is no flashing of any error codes. The engine turns over but will not start. The fuel pressure is correct and fuel pump is working as per normal. I will fit a new set of spark plug cables in including HT from coil . Tomorrow. I have checked CAS and it appears to be correctly installed. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Did the car run before you replaced the CAS? Did you just replace the CAS itself or with the Distributor as a whole

The Red and Green inspection lamps are normally steady on, when the mode selector is turned off/ fully counter clockwise.
As procedure in Haynes says to make sure mode selector is Off before turning ignition to ON,
then check that the lamps are steady on before then going into diagnostic mode

I only replaced CAS the car ran prior to replacement but was hard to start like it wasn't getting the fuel, it has new fuel filter and the fuel pressure is correct as I installed a fuel pressure gauge it shows just under 40psi prior to cas installation the error codes seem to work as I identified cylinder head temp sensor error so replaced that, it was suggested to replace cas as it controls so much of the electric system. I have tried turning the screw on ECU counter clockwise before starting but the lights stay on no matter what. One thing that comes to mind was prior to this problem when starting the engine if it didn't start first time you could hear what seemed a click sound like e relay resetting before restarting it seemed to come from cylinder head area close to fast idle sensor? Now there's no click. could it be an open relay I'm not sure ,

No relay there but the Fast idle solenoid would click. Anyway your car may have a low battery if relays aren't making a click when power goes to them

The ecu lights should only light up when Ignition turned to "ON" position When key is turned off, they should then fade out after a few seconds. If they still on, ECU is getting power when it shouldn't

Side note: the 87 and 89 FSM found at http://www.xenonzcar.com/z31/fsm.html Have good diagnostic pages for
    trouble shooting

Thanks for info very useful, however I managed to find the culprit. The plug on loom from CAS although clipped together ok the connection seemed to slide in with no feel of contacts so detoxed the terminals and carefully closed the contacts this made for a definate feel when pushed together. Car started first time.
