How can I damage the torque wrench?
It is rated higher than the effort I am pushing at it.
I know I am pushing 100Nm at it because it is almost clicking.
I just think that is too much effort when undoing a bolt so I would rather get it removed somewhere that if anything breaks, there is an option to get it sorted out.

Well I now know (after contacting people who know) that I wasn't doing the wrong thing. Annoying that I hsve wasted 3 days undoing bits and then putting them back on. I have achieved nothing. Could have been working on one of those days.

I know the thread on the bolt (which is the correct OEM Nissan bolt) is 12M and 1.25 , so it is the same as our wheel studs and wheel nuts. Just happens to one size I don't have in my tap/die box.

I put the radius arm with the hacked up bush back in, so I can carefully drive the car somewhere to get it taken out again, get the other one out, bushes pressed out, have the threads on the bolt and UAS Brace cleaned up. Get the wheel alignment fixed and then I need tyres.

It would be good if one shop that isn't too far away could do it all.

Front camber will have to be sorted another day soon because I don't want to waste another set of tyres.

4 mild steel metal plates with 3 holes in each seems simple enough, but if the control arm bushes need replacing anyway, then an adjustable control arm probably works out cheaper. So I will look at those option too.

You need to understand a torque wrench is designed for tightening a bolt to a specific torque setting its not designed to undo a torqued nut or bolt as that will damage the sensitive mechanism inside the wrench.

Also a torque wrench is not long enough compared to a breaker bar to crack a high torque bolt like the one your trying to remove. A long breaker bar allows you more leverage to apply more force with minimal effort from you.

I am just trying to explain you should be using a breaker bar to make life easier for yourself.

The car was as high off the ground on my 4WD style ramps as I could get it.
A long bar wouldn't have been an option.

    Need a hoist.

    Yes, stuffed the torque wrench.

This getting expensive (and I still have to replace two tyres )

I need a bolt. So anyone in Brisbane who has parted out a Zed, might have one of these laying around.

The one that I need goes through that fluid filled caster bush in the radius rod.
Front of car, location would be shown in a pic in this thread.
It is normally tightened on a thin thread in the bracket and has a normal nut on the end.

    The spec of the bolt.
On the head it has 9B embossed.
It is about 12cm in length.
The bolt is stepped because the part with the thread is narrower.
The thread is M12 / 1.25 same as our wheel nuts.

    I just need the bolt.

Mechanic has told me to come back with the bolt and he will be more confident of getting the old one out as it might break or need cutting and he doesn't want to leave me with a non driveable car.

Any fastener shop will have this

I had a few members contact me to offer a bolt.
Thanks for the effort to look in that old pile of bolts for me and my Zed.

I just went and picked one up from CARZ.

As Rob suggested these bolts might be available from a Nut and Bolt shop, but I did yt ry 3 and no luck.

Since you said so, I checked at a couple of specialist Nut and Bolt suppliers.

    They could not match
see photo, thread is M12x1.25 thread. The shaft has a taper toward the thread.

What is the diameter & thread pitch?

Eyeballing it looks like M10x100, should be $1.50 in standard pitch or $6 in fine pitch. Maybe not at burnings but shouldn't be a hard job for any fastener or engineering supplies store -the prices I listed were from an Aussie web based supplier.

United Fasteners in Brisbane list the same sizes in stainless, 12.9 HT, 8.8 HT etc in their online catalogue too; it really shouldn't be hard to find.

I think you'll have trouble with the reduced shank. Put a wanted add up, Jamie will probably have a few spare from all the cars he's parted out.

    Thanks everyone.
A couple of posts back I wrote that I got one from Carz. Martin Williams had one for me too.
I was just replying to Rob260 and wanted to show a picture of it.
As Crispy says, the shank diff was an issue for the two places I tried. They probably would have offered a tube over a 12mm bolt to make it 14mm on the shaft, so not ideal.

Anyway Rob260 has suggested a place that lists it in their online catalogue.

I wonder if the other two bolts that hold the brace are also like this.

Car is at Gavin Autoech right now getting that bolt off.

I checked at Gold Coast Fasteners (or Coastal Fasteners) they didn't have it either.

Anyway the bolt is out and replaced.
Here it is (and also under a microscope)

That't a bit chewed up! Someone has probably given it a tap with a hammer to get it in position. I know I've been guilty of that in the past

I was thinking it was a bit of metal dragged through the thread by the bolt.
    It is welded on now.

Thread file will clean that up well enough for reuse.

Seems to be a rather long winded exercise to change those bushes lol.

FYI for next time, use a hole saw to cut the guts of the oem bushing out. Then use a hacksaw or reciprocating saw to cut through the outer shell (the part that pressed into the rod housing) to allow for shrinkage. Then with a flat head screwdriver or cold chisel ideally, tap the shell out.

Once the rods removed. This job should take no more then maybe 20 mins to get the old bushes out.

Installing new bushes can be just as quick also. I used my bench vice to aid pushing them into the rods. Lots of lube and they slide right in...

Yes took more than a month because once I was told I needed to change the bush, there was the problem of not being able to get that bolt out. So I had the 3 piece Energy Suspension poly bush ready to put in. Don't need to press them in as they are put in from both sides of the OEM radius arm.

Yes I did take one side out (the easy side was first) hacked the oem bush out and started attacking it with a drill then hacksaw. While that was in the vice, I got under the car and found out I couldn't get the other side's bolt out.
So I patched up the dismantled bush and put it back on the car so I could drive to a mechanic.
Went to a mechanic who put it up on the hoist and decided it wasn't coming out unless a spare bolt was standing by, incase the original was damaged.

There were too many trips back and forth to the mechanic and to pick up a bolt, with the patched up bush. I should not have done that. Car doesn't brake very well with a wheel that is shifting around.

Bush is in, brace is on and now the car needs the camber corrected and then a wheel alignment.

Correct, The caster changes as the wheel moves up and down due to them being "radius rods", You really do need the rubber inserts as there is sone twist involved in this movement, At least these let you adjust the caster which the stock rods dont.

I wouldn't ever use rose jointed rods on a road car, They, in theory, should not pass a road worthy.

    These ones will.........

  19. Hey guys I'm having to fix my radius rod bushes both sides but is there a way I can do that without having to disconnect suspension brakes and all the rest? Or is it just as easy to take the lot out? Plz help
