    Doug Memorial Cruise 2016

Hey everyone, just thought I'd post up a thread about how the 3rd year running of the Doug (red32) Memorial cruise went for the lucky few who ended up attending the event.

So this year's cruise was going to be situated around the Gisborne, Kyneton and Wooden country towns of Victoria and unfortunately for us the weather started off in the morning a very chilly 13 degrees with a super freezing gusty wind which we would find out to be the start of our problems for the first half of the cruise.

Anyways we all gathered at the BP servo just off the Calder Freeway for a meet and greet of the attendees for this years cruise.

Once we had a small meeting with Mark regarding our cruise plans for the day, we quickly jumped into the Z's and headed off to Mt Macedon our first stop for the day and there we were hoping to meet up with RENZED who was waiting for us there.

Unfortunately the very extremely windy conditions become a big headache for us trying to go through some back roads up the mountain.

Here is what confronted us after we got off the freeway and with all the tree debris on the roads leading up to this road, I wasn't surprised at what we saw.

That's right not 1 tree but 2 tress had come down pretty bad.

So with no alternative we had to back track and find an alternative route to get up the mountain. When we did get to the Mt Macedon car park, RENZED was there waiting for us but the weather was just terrible up on top of Mt Macedon and as we were all freezing from the gusty winds coming over the mountain we quickly jumped back in the Z's and headed to our next stop in Kyneton.

When we arrived at Kyneton we headed to a local bakery for breakfast and a short chat about all things Z related.

From Kyneton we headed for some twisty country roads and after an hour of spirited driving we stopped at the Coliban River falls.

Unfortunately for me, while trailing behind everyone else, I had a freighting experience where I slide off the road coming at a blind sharp u turn bend road at 95 kmpr. I slammed my brakes and tried to turn into the bend but the Z slide sideways and into some tall grassy ground along the side of the road. I was extremely lucky I didn't hit anything during my spin-out and all I managed to suffer from the incident was small amounts of mud splatter along the side of the Z. As it was a country road there were no warning signs for me to prepare for what I was coming to and though I reacted the best way I could considering the speed I was going but I'm just grateful I didn't damage the Z in anyway.

Anyways we then headed from the Coliban River falls to our last stop at Woodend.

And that's it, we all headed home after a short chat and I would like to thank Mark for doing another fantastic job running this cruise and I'm looking forward to cruising again soon on this years GOR which Mark says will be a mostly inland cruise route due to the GOR road closures currently in effect.

Thanks to everyone that came on the cruise on Sunday. We were way down on numbers compared to the previous Dougy cruises, but we still managed 7 cars. So thanks again to those that came. Lets see if I get this right, but we had myself (JEDI-77), Andrew (Krausy), Tim (Lidz), Adam (ADAMZX), Will (sorry Will, not sure what your forum name is) Sean (TQE-756), and Renee and Craig (RENZED and R31 Gagz). We also had a new Zed owner, Nick, who came with us on his Motorbike. So thanks for tagging along and hopefully we'll see you soon in the Zed. It certainly was a wild day, or more specifically, wild weather. Massive winds and not particularly warm. But if you stayed home because of the weather, you missed out on a fun cruise. We had no rain the whole day, except for some light drizzle on the way to the meet up point. But the rest of the day was perfectly dry, hardly any traffic, and the sun still managed to shine through by late morning. And plenty of twisty roads.

We did face some hazards though. The last few weeks of crazy weather in Victoria has brought down many trees. We counted 5 trees in total, with one of them completely blocking the road and making us turn around and find another route. We carried on with caution and still had a blast.

We stopped at Mt Macedon to meetup with Renee (RenZed) and Craig. I didnt take any pics here as being on top of the mountain was icy cold and bloody windy. So we quickly left and headed to Kyneton.

Anyway, enjoy the pics below. I didnt take many, and i'm sure some of the other guys will add some more.

Meetup point at BP Servo, Calder Hwy, Out bound...

Yep, this big bastard came down. Forget the road name, but somewhere in tha backroads between Gisborne and Mt Macedon. And if you look about 100m down the road, another tree has also come down as well. Coming around the corner at a spirited pace to find this sucker certainly gave the brakes a good workout. As we did a U-Turn to find another way to My Macedon, the Police had arrived on the other side. So I'm assuming these trees had only recently come down...

This was much later in the cruise, towards the end in fact. But it was too scenic not to post some pics... This is the Coliban Reservoir which we drove past on the way to Woodend... All the heavy rainfall and flooding in the area has turned this into a pretty impressive sight. Last time I drove past here, it was nothing like this...

All parked, lets walk to the reservoir and get some pics...

This is normally grassland. At the moment, its a lake...

Trying to be artistic, not really succeeding....

Time to go, lets head to Woodend...

Woodend was our finishing point.... Lined up in usual Zed fashion... Even had a lady and her husband take some photos of the Zeds because "they looked marvelous"....

Your telling me, I was differently out of my confront zone with the speed I was going down these whiny country roads and having never driving on them before I had no clue what to expect leading up to the turn. Most of the time warning/cautionary signs give me an idea what I need to do when I approach a turn but this time there was nothing but a wooden fence with a black and white arrow sign indication which way the road was going. When I saw how sharp the bend was I slammed my brakes and tried to turn into the bend but the Z locked up and almost did a 360 before it straighten and sent me into the grass. Scared the shit out of me.
