PTU change

Decided to finally replace my S1 PTU with a S2. Has been playing up for a while, dropping onto 5 cylinders and missing above 4500rpm, not surprising really.
This one could win awards for worst wiring job ever.
Damn I hate back yard amateurs!!!!!!!!!!

The Z wisperer

After 2 years of putting up with one of the poorest running twin turbos in Aus, I took the Z to a mechanic suggested to me by a close friend who has an old Corvair.

The Z has slowely gotten worse over the past 6 months to the point where it didn't want to start in my driveway. I got it out to Leopold, drove past the old Brytech establishment, thinking I'm on my way to visit another mechanic who is going to pick 100 things wrong with it which arent even the problem.

but when I showed up, he lifted the hood, gave it a few rev's and told me what noone else in the past 2 years who said they were mechanics probably should have told me from the start "I don't hear the turbos working"

even more specifically, he can hear one wind down a little bit, but the other one is 100% doing nothing.

"How does it boost" he asked
"Its never boosted, it usually hangs on 0psi, occasionally I've gotten it up to 2psi or 8 psi if I really pushed it. but that's the thing. it doesnt boost"

I've told this to several people over the past 2 years. and it took this guy a whole 10 seconds to tell me that I have 2 siezed turbos which would probably have been that way since they were put in 2 years ago.

he also noticed fairly quickly that there was an oil leak when my car was sitting, so it didn't take long for both of us to come to the conclusion its probably coming from the turbo line.

I told the guy "the block is pretty good, its shows up at 150psi fairly even across all cylinders, but it really needs to be stripped down and just put together properly"

so thats what is going to happen.
the engine is coming out, the turbo's assessed, and if they are in a good enough state to be rebuilt, they will be, then eveything else will be checked and fixed if needed as it all goes back together.

after a 30 minute drive, the engine was still really quite cool, and he said that it does idle fairly nicely, so after 2 years of having various people look at this car to tell me what is wrong with it. I finally found a guy who can just listen to whats going on and tell me what needs to be done.

how can at least 4 other people completely miss that you can't hear any activity from the turbo's at all. hopefully after owning this Z for almost 7 years (bought in 2009) I might actually have a properly running zx.

thanks for reading
you'd think you would have just told them
did

everyone whos taken it for a test has just told me that's pretty much what to expect from a TT

so what? I'm to expect a slow piece of shit that doesn't boost over 2psi and a big stock Toyot Camry can accelerate faster?

I had a guy drive it when it was clearly ****ed and a tooth was out on the drive belt. it couldn't go over 40km/h and he said it drives pretty much like a standard TT.

the problem is. too many people I've met on this forum are complete wankers. they seriously shouldnt be giving advice on z's or trying to fix them, and especially charging money for it.

no offense to the few who are switched on.

anyway.
see you at a car show one day maybe.

**** this

Left her on the drive way in dire straits, needing a good wash and polish on my way to work this morning. However, still conclude there is no point because we have dust storms most afternoons due to the fires we had before christmas.

Oh and keep looking at the new TT engine i have to go over sitting in the shed.

Still have the turbos with a machinist/turbo rebuild, work mate, getting high flowed with billet goodness...

Mitch Has one gear: GO

Turned some spanners on the Z today. First time I've worked on it in almost 2 years.

With rego looming and the power steering pump well and truly shagged, I started the conversion to a NA pump and reservoir. II'm also doing a coolant system flush and an oil change at the same time.

Basic workflow was:
1. Partially drain radiator, ad radiator flush
2. Add some liqui moly engine oil flush
3. Drive for about 30 minutes
4. Jack the vehicle, drain the coolant
5. Drain the oil, pull the filter
6. Undo 4x 10mm nuts on viscous fan.
7. Remove radiator brackets and hoses, Pull radiator out of vehicle
8. Remove throttle body pipes and turbo pipes
9. Remove HICAS solenoid fittings, remove reservoir
10. Undo tensioner bracket on PS pump, Loosen belt.
11. Remove PS pump, get covered in dexron 3
12. Remove power steering pump bracket.
13. Degrease the shit out of EVERYTHING. It was caked on 10mm thick in places.

There's plenty of threads on this, but so far it's going fairly well. The brackets are different, the pump is different, and the bracket to engine block bolts for the NA bracket are the same pitch, but need to be 10mm longer as the NA bracket is a thicker casting.

I bought a 3pk895 belt, I read somewhere a 3pk880 is needed, but should be fine, I believe there is enough adjustment as it is...

Stay tuned.

Damn zeds, need constant attention.

it's been 6 months already since the swap and everything has heat cycled enough times.

Front bar off
Installed intercooler ducts
Tightened all boost hoses
Fixed small coolant leak from turbo water pipe
Topped up coolant
Changed trans fluid
Put subwoofer back in the boot since I can't find a buyer
Changed from short shifter back to modified stockie
