Audi R8 Coilpack Conversion Kit - Preorder

The following post is stolen from here.

"For those of you looking for more technical data on these coil packs, here is what we've found so far with our bench ( oscilloscope ) testing:

1) These coils can be used on your FSI/TSI engine at ANY level of modification. They function just as well on a dead stock car as a highly modified one.

2) They are NOT the same coils with red housings. The secondary circuit on the R8 coils has a higher resistance (more windings) than the stock coils. In fact the secondary circuits were slightly closer to the Okadas we tested than the secondary of the stock coils.

3) We tested these between 12 and 16 volts (remember if your alternator is charging properly the input will be right around 14). We tested them between 200 and 16,000rpm. The stock coils started to misfire at a much lower rpm than the R8's with a stock spark plug gapped @ .032".

4) The spark was visibly brighter and more intense on the R8's when compared to the stock coils @ every rpm we compared in the stock rev range. We didn't compare anything under 1,000rpm.

5) We were able to open the gap on the plugs much further with the R8's than the stock plug with out misfiring at the same rpm/voltage.

6) Here is what we were finding as an AVERAGE on the secondary circuit for each of the coils.

Stock: 3.3 M ohms < refers to stock audi coils
R8's: 5.31 M ohms"

Still looking for more details on the actual voltage, but the 60% increase in resistance implies that the coils are have a lot more windings, ie a much higher voltage.

 

I am with you on that rationale.
But I buy things and never fit them, this might end up as another box in the shed.

 

the only time you will see any gains is when you hi up in the power level 500hp+ up untill then the stock TT coil pack are good , even good after that , there are stock s2 tt coil packs as well ( not sure if you guys no that ) , you can run a larger gap up top , this burns the fuel better , ( on boost ) etc etc etc
yeah sure some people who have spent all this money have indeed said that yes they notice a difference ( wonder why )

as far as these audi coil packs go well i think there a complete waist of money and time , , but if you see a difference between coil pack ( for the everyday guy) well the only thing i can say is that you started of with bad coil pack/s ( your old z32 ones )

now is this a good mod to do to your zed , well you need to know what and why you are doing before you do it ,
if you ask me well its not really for everyone
are you going to feel anything , well simply NO
is this a good mod, well YES ( for the right person ) and car
do you need to put these 350$ 500$ audi ones in there , well they do look good and they look nice in the engine bay

all the coil packs i have seen and tested , and have seen tested , have shown nothing for your 400hp 500hp?? engine ( unless you have an underlining issue )

yes i have done this mod ages ago, sure , i have good coil pack on my car , and i make good power , did i notice any difference? NO
all im saying is dont waist your money ,
i did the mod for myself and for my own reasons

 

You have missed the point entirely.

The benefits are
* Don't need a PTU (think of all the people running S1 PTU's that they don't have to replace now)
* Brand new units (think of all the people running 20yr old coil packs, and connectors etc)
* Significantly lower cost to stock Nissan units
* Potentially a more powerful unit compared to stock

These are AU$59 each including connector (or AU$84 after the initial buy), a hell of a lot cheaper than US$99 (AUD$128) for just a Nissan coilpack. Or US$495 (AUD$643) for a complete set of splitfires. And you'd still need to get new connectors for those, which is yet another cost.

They appear to have a better spark, which is great. That's the bonus on top. Sure for the every day person it won't make a difference. But that's not the whole story, I'd much rather a brand new coilpack than a shitty old one any day. And if I can get one that's potentially got more power, is a better price and more readily available then awesome, win win.

I fail to see how this is any different to the splitfires. Sure you can buy them to put on a stock car, probably won't do much either, but if you have issues with coilpacks, they are a perfectly valid option. And then you know it's all up to scratch.

I mean ffs how many people have ignition and electrical issues which could probably be solved by a good set of coils, coil connectors, plugs and loom. Should we tell them not to bother either? Cause it won't make any more power? Seriously mate come on.

For reference, OEM/Splitfire prices were taken from czp.us and converted to current AUD. They do not include shipping whereas the R8 coils do.

 

There are certain members that are having issues with this buy. Take it up with the OP or contact a moderator if you feel you need to.

It's due to the size of the top cap of the coilpack. It will catch on the side of the plenum on a couple of cylinders (especially cylinder #2). A shaved plenum can cure that. A person tried it on an unmodified plenum but it was a no-go for a few cylinders. However, if the plastic spark plug tubes are removed, then it is doable on an unmodified plenum. The extra space available to cant the coilpack over after it's been popped up slightly is enough to wiggle them out.

That Buy\Sell Facebook link that I posted (and got deleted) had all of that tech info and more. Probably the most extensive (and up to date) data accumulated regarding the Audi R8 coilpack conversion for a Z32.

Perhaps GM Brezzo would allow for me to repost it?

my two cents

Im a bit dumb founded with certain comments in regards to this mod. Theres so much back and forth over how much hp gains and power/inceased kv will come from switching to he r8 coils and as stated many times its probably none.

Power is always the ideal goal of any build but should never be the main focus, anyone who has ever spent some time at the track knows the importance of strength and reliability. Switching to a much more reliable coil that will be less expensive and easier to come by in the later years is by no means a mod to be overlooked. I had these coils on my last zed and never had an issue i was also able to remove my plennum in under 15mins they also provided a much more even spark at high boost on full noise.

I am going to be putting these back on my current zed and highly recommend this mod to all others members and can ensure you its not a waste of money when you can remove the ptu in its entirty and simply test coils if you have an issue down the track.
