You are after pillar mounted seat belts, but will also need the same door trim if you want to do a proper install otherwise you will have a hole where the seat belts used to be

Cam look up chads build thread, there are photos of what he did to allow for b pillar mounted seat belts to mount to the factory hole in his Zed.

what you can do is pull your trim off and have a look for the upper screw hole for the top mount for the pillar seat belts and if you have the threaded nut in the hole already then you can juust install new pillar seats belts otherwise you'll need to install a small steel plate with a nut welded to it into the hole.

This was done on mine and love it.

Holes behind carpet floor along door will for ancho r point, peel the plastic off it to reveal hole.top bit requires a plate with welded. Tie a piece of string and dangle down will with but facing outwards. Thread seatbelt bolt in tight and then drill a hole in the small circle below where you feed that plate in. Do the same for the above small hole. Done

The klippan units should be fine on either the door or the body.

    for info only

    Just for info

They were put there to prevent car jackings as car jackings were on the increase at the time. You cant open the door very well if the seatbelt is being used.

So murphy's law says that you will be carjacked shortly after you convert -:eek:

I admit there a pain in the arse though and when it comes to a collision, pillar mounted seatbelts fair better since the doors often come ajar in a collision.

Will be a pain in the arse to change it all over - please let us (the forum and me) know if you do it in the end and the problems you encountered along the way

    Cheers and goodluck

That reminds me of the old Porsche, it had a "safety feature" that stopped the doors from locking when the key was in the ignition. Easy target for car jacker.

Just checked that the Zed can be locked while it is being driven. :D

You sure about that car jacking thing? I mean I wouldn't think there would be too many car jackings in Japan. I always just assumed it was for easier access since the B pillar sits a fair way back. In the us they used a different mechanism that was designed to keep the belt buckled while you could open the door. It was one of the many 'auto seatbelt' designs manufacturers were putting in place for lazy Americans at the time.

This was my understanding as well. The way I remeber it in the early 90s car manufacturers could either fit an airbag or auto seatbelts in the state's this later gave way to compulsory airbags

The Klippan units from your other thread are designed to be installed vertically, the door mount seat belts sit at an angle (maybe 20deg from vertical?) so the tilt lock would probably be active if door mounted

Cam (or are you the other guy  ) that big thread about name change also suggested a workaround.
