    hey guys

i was chatting with one of my mates who's a panel beater, and asked how much he could do the Z for,

he quoted me inside and out.... 4k, and thats because he said no one wants to work on Z's because they are a PITA to pull apart and such,

now i know this is a more than reasonable offer, but he said if i dismantled it my self (no idea) he would do it for 2k

i wasnt going for a crazy colour either, just a regular 2pac diamond white

seems a bit much for me ATM, but im sure i could send some work his way?

paint work is like steak, you get what you pay for. 2k is very cheap, half of that would be gone in materials and thats if using cheap materials, its not hard to blow 2k if using good laquer and flex additive in the right places.

It deoends how fussy you are, if you dont mind a peely finish etc.

nah he isnt skimping on the paints, ive seen the work he did for his missus (same price) and holy bats batman, its good

he is pretty much charging labour, cause he hates working on Z's

Sounds interesting, can u ask how much for just a bonnet? Also, how much to just spray the outside the same factory black?

he could do a bonnet for $400, but that was a quote to my friend's mx-5

ill get onto him about it tonight

just the outside would be around 2k, cause there's less dimantaling involved

As Niall said, 2k is cheap in the scheme of things.

The steak analogy is spot on too. Cheap paint, cheap thinners, cheap guns.... average job.

Its not uncommon for other members to spent 6k on paint and not think twice about it. As the end result is better than factory.

Either way, your decision. Best of luck with it all.

i know a guy who works for candyman custom resprays, and does some cash jobs from home. Quoted 2k for a respray in the same type of colour, but more for colour change. To respray my hatch was only $150 i think?

That is a very good price an even better if he does a good job :p

I suppose if he is not paying rent/insurance/tax/etc and you are paying only for paint and labour that would bring the cost down.

I'm assuming he is still doing this in a booth though and baking etc?

?. ummm, if you hate working on something, you charge more.

Look, i personally wouldn't, because i know that good paint, thinners, pearls, clears, guns and booths all cost a lot of money. The cheaper the job, the cheaper the materials. At the end of the day, he isn't just breaking even. He'd be an idiot, he's obviously making a profit. What i'd want to know is, where is the profit coming from? He must be skimping on good paint, to make up for the cheap price to put food on his table?.

If you want to pay for peanuts, your gonna get peanuts. And you cant complain later.

If you pay for a good job, you get it, and if you dont, you sure as hell have every right to complain about it.

    Just my opinion. :)

guys, im mentioning he is doing that as a favour, hence why its so cheep

ive seen his work before, and its great, no peeling or shoddy work

i know exactly where he gets his paints from, and what ones he will be using

only costs incurred to him will be paints and booth.

i understand that cheap work can mean shit work, but he sticks to the rule, "do it once, do it right" because i wanted to skimp on parts of the car, but he wants to do it right

i know all cars can be a PITA to dismantle, but he was saying that japanese cars are always tight fiddly things to work with, and hence why he is charging me MORE for it.

its not a bodgey backyard job, its a professional job done by a close friend, nothing to do with putting food on the table, just a favour... that i could possibly extend to the sydney members.

if i have come off as lashing out i am very sorry, im just trying to pass on some very handy info for those who are interested

Not at all buddy, I see where your coming from, but still, I can't see how something can be so cheap, as a favor for people he doesn't know, on cars he doesn't like to work on, without making a profit. And the only way he can make a profit on 2g is if he is using shotty paint... Or hot... I dunno.

That's all, just trippin me out. Nice of you to include the forum though mate.

I've had a few cars worked on by a guy in Underwood, Brisbane over they years - he's always done a great / professional job. He said he'll do a full respray on a Z for between $2500 & $3000. I've got no reason to suspect that I'd get a crap job at that price. So if someone says - "you bring me the car fully stripped back so I just get busy sanding & painting & I'll do it for $2000" - I wouldn't think that that was unbelieveably cheap. If you're going to remove all the lights / weather strips, etc yourself and then have to refit them all yourself, you'd expect a "good price and a good job"!

I spent $1200 on Paint alone for my respray.

yeah thats what im saying. I spent 2500 in materials to do 3/4 of the car. i do have stuff left over, but thats for someone in the trade too .

Having been around paint shops my whole life, its just very difficult to belive that you can get a good job for 2 thousand dollars.

His work might not be shoddy, but there are alot of differences between a good paint job and a great job. flex additive should really be used on bumpers and other flexible items on these cars, top stop over normal filler, smoothing stone guard , the list goes on.

Im not taking anything away from your mate or trying to deter anyone but for me when i go the expense of a respray id rather go that bit more to get factory quality or higher. like mine ;)

Hey Rollin how about putting some photos in your garage then!! I'm initiating a new campaign......to get members to populate their garages. I'm always looking to peoples garages following thread comments only to find an empty space, even with many of the long time members. Some of these members appear to have really nice cars, yet not a single photo in the garage :(

Sorry, don't get me wrong - I couldn't agree more - usually "you get what you pay for!". Obviously no one's going to get mirrored panels and a factory finish paint job for $2k - I'd doubt anyone would get close to Rollin's finish for even $6k. But if someone doesn't have $6k+ under the mattress and their clear coat is vanishing faster than a fake tan, then I'm just letting members know that a $2k-$3k respray possibly might be the go!
